What could be better than the lush sacred choral music of the 20th Century? Perhaps it would be choral music accompanied by brass ensemble. Rich and sonorous, this concert features both a cappella and brass accompaniment to the music of Elgar, Britten, Tavener, Rutter, topped off by a delightful short jazz mass by Bob Chilcott (of Kings’ Singers fame).

America created several distinctive genres of music in the 19th and 20th Centuries, including American folk songs and African-American spirituals. Many folk songs, such as Shenandoah and The Water is Wide, are stunningly set with soaring melodies and beautiful harmonies; while others like Down By the Riverside are upbeat and will leave you tapping your toe. Spirituals range from Thomas Dorsey’s moving and melodic Precious Lord, Take My Hand to the stirring Moses Hogan arrangements of Climbin’ Up the Mountain and Elijah Rock. Come hear this varied and tuneful concert of old favorites and newer arrangements, which are sure to leave you wanting more.
